Apologies in advance…

…to Ken, who is no doubt tired of my not-so-subtle attempts to point out rings that I like, but I couldn’t resist posting about these…

Sigh. So, so pretty! All of these rings are from Sarah Perlis – you should go check out the rest of the amazing things on her site – it’s a good way to kill some time!

Lamp or dress?

Posted in Uncategorized on 09/23/2010 by Melissa

I know this may shock you, but occasionally I have a hard time spending money. Sometimes I get stuck between wanting things for my apartment and wanting things for myself, and it seems like spending money on either is a waste because then I’ll just wish I made the other choice. For instance…

Floor Lamp from CB2

I’ve been digging this lamp since I saw it over the summer, and it would be the perfect upgrade to the old, crooked, out-of-scale lamp that’s currently in my living room. It’s also pretty reasonably priced for such a large lighting piece, so, no-brainer, right?

But what I really also want is new clothes for fall, since I’ve noticed that all of my old fall clothes are stupid or nonexistent. Am I the only one who starts each season by looking through their closet and thinking “What the hell did I wear last fall/summer/winter? All of this is crap!”

(And yes, I know that really it’s just the powerful brainwashing of our capitalist culture and the fashion industry that makes me hate all the perfectly wearable clothes that I bought just last year. I’m just trying to help spend our way out of this economic downturn. 😉 )

Like, I would wear this every other day…

Maybe I should open a store where you could buy cool housewares and clothing and the more you shopped, the more credit you would earn toward buying? Buy a couch, get 20% off a dress!

Hmmmm….

Try not to be jealous…

…when you see me rocking my awesome vintage cape this fall and winter!

Vintage Woolrich cape via Etsy

It’s almost too perfect for words! It’s my favorite color, it’s functional (waterproof and lined in wool), it’s in excellent condition, and even with shipping it was a mere tenth of the cost of my beloved Phillip Lim cape. Yes, yes, yes!!!!

Now, what to eat for breakfast?

Imaginary House

Posted in Uncategorized on 09/18/2010 by Melissa

I think I’m going to make this a regular feature here on the ol’ blog: there’s so many good houses out there, why should I try to limit the pretend home-buyer in my mind to just one? Now, if only certain gentlemen by the names of A. Wang and P. Lim would stop derailing my savings plan with their high-priced merchandise, I might eventually get closer to buying something like this…

430 Smith St, Peekskill NY via Coldwell Banker

This house falls under my move-to-the-suburbs-and-commute-to-the-city fantasy life. Its old, affordable, has some crazy-amazing wallpaper and wood floors…

In the Pretendsville where this is my house, I would spend my weekends finding awesome vintage furniture in antique stores along the Hudson Valley and baking pies in my giant kitchen…

New cabinets: yes. New floors: never.

The best thing since…

Posted in Uncategorized on 09/13/2010 by Melissa

We’ve all heard the saying “The best thing since sliced bread.” Well, I’m gonna go out on a limb here and suggest that, as a society, its time to update our benchmark for the most awesome product – the product by which all other products are judged. Move over, bread…

I humbly submit that the robot vacuum, or Roomba, is far superior to sliced bread, in that in can clean your floors for you. Bread, while delicious, just makes you fat. We received our Roomba earlier this week and its like living in the future, today!

You just push the start button, and off he goes, scooting around your floors, looking for dirt and dust, merrily reaching in the corners and under the bed. In addition to cleaning, watching Roomba provides hours of entertainment, as you anxiously wonder if he can find his way out of the tangle of wires under the desk or over the threshold between the living room and hallway. (He always does find his way. He’s a robot.)

The one downside is that now I wish there were robots to take care of all my household chores…so if any of you out there build robots as a hobby, I’d like one that can put away the laundry and one that can wash the dishes (I know, out in suburbia you have “dishwashers” but those haven’t been invented yet in NYC.) Thanks!

Some men hunt for sport, others hunt for food – The only thing I’m hunting for is an outfit that looks good…

The calendar says its September, but we’re still stuck in this awful perma-August weather we’ve been having since the beginning of time. Its really putting a damper on my ability to wear cute new fall outfits – all I can manage is to stare longingly at things online while I sit in shorts and a tank top in my sweltering apartment.

Cape, don’t let anyone tell you you aren’t worth $795. You most certainly are. Maybe I should help you with your self-esteem?

Do you think Clarks would mind if I also started to love shoes from Bass? There’s room in my life for lots of old-timey shoe brands!

Summer, take a hint and get out of town!
