Happy Halloween!

Posted in Uncategorized on 10/30/2010 by Melissa

I possess no actual artistic ability, so instead of carving pumpkins, we just drew some faces on mini pumpkins…

Just as cute, with no messy clean up! The only downside is no delicious pumpkin seeds to eat…

For the birds…

I know its been forever since I’ve posted anything here – work gets into these crazy cycles where I have literally no time for anything! I guess it’s good to be busy, but who will keep everyone focused on the best old lady shoes and vintage furniture if I’m not around?

After a long, long week of supervising people wrapping tree branches and pinecones in snow-colored yarn (yeah, it’s hard to explain) I needed a little treat, so I ordered myself this…

While I’d love to say that I ordered an actual Charley Harper print, I really just got a new cover for my phone from GelaSkins. I probably should use a case that offers a little more protection than a vinyl sticker, but I like to live dangerously.

Imaginary House: Swedish Fantasy Edition

If you see me staring off into space with a daydreamy expression on my face, I’m probably pretending to be here…

There’s not really words to describe the sheer perfection of this house. Go look at the rest of the pictures and you’ll understand. I’ll just be here, trying to figure out how to find 1.3 million dollars and a way to immigrate to Sweden.

So I took your advice…

…and went with the lamp. I must say, I love it!

It’s exactly what that sad corner of the living room needed, and the warmth and quality of the light adds such a cozy feeling to the room.

The only downside was when I thought it was a good idea to carry it home on the subway from Soho – I don’t know why, but I always think I’m much taller and stronger than I actually am…oh, well!

You might also notice that I took another step towards conquering my bare white walls…

This is just a simple piece of fabric stretched over canvas stretchers and secured with a staple gun. My friend Chris showed me this trick years ago, and I think it’s a pretty fool-proof way to add large scale pattern or color to your walls without spending a lot of money. Total cost was probably around $45 (fabric from Ikea at $8/yard, $25 for stretcher bars, $12 for staple gun and staples) – try finding a large piece of art for that price!

Rainy day project…

Posted in Uncategorized on 10/04/2010 by Melissa

I guess I got what I wanted – fall is definitely here! It is gross and rainy out, but luckily I’ve got the next few days off from work, so I’m hopefully going to stay in and work on some housey projects that I’ve been meaning to tackle.

One of the main things that still bugs me about our apartment is the lack of decoration – we’ve got lots of great furniture, but aside from the kitchen, almost all of the walls are still white, and there’s little art or anything hung up. Exhibit A:

Boring old bedroom! One day (maybe this week?!?) I will paint this wall charcoal gray, but I took a small step towards sprucing it up by hanging some 8″x10″ frames above my desk today…

I didn’t have any “art” per se, so I just took some cool fabric that I had and put it in one frame, and then used another frame to preserve the super-OCD, to-scale floor plan I drew of my very first solo studio apartment. In the other two frames (we had a set of four frames that we bought for something else, but they were the wrong size) I wrote out one of my favorite poems. That sounds a little lame, but it’s Poe, so it’s dark and moody and therefore not lame. 😉

It’s a small thing, but it gives me confidence to try other projects, which is always the hardest part!
